Interestingly, the imperial name was used by chrysler for its top of the line model since 1926, but never as its own make. That is until 1955, when the manufacturer made it its own make to compete with cadillac and lincoln. While it always seemed a distant third to those rival brands, it pulled within 5,330 units of lincolnã¢?? S 41,123 units in 1957. This 1965 imperial crown convertible is a great example of the luxury and style of the chrysler brand and is one of 633 produced. Cloaked in a brilliant shade of red paint and complimentary burgundy leather interior, this imperial was bought on april 11, 1965 from harold motors, inc. Among the 1965 model yearã¢?? S features were walnut veneer on the steering column and instrument panel. This was carefully harvested claro walnut, 8 oz were fit for the imperial. Note the conventional steering-column shift lever for the torqueflite automatic transmission that replaced the push buttons that had been used on these cars for the prior decade. Powered by the numbers-matching 413 cid v8, this car gently glides down the road and drives like a dream with the heavenly power steering. Relax in the burgundy bench seat that provides an abundance of comfort thanks to argentine quebacho wood, a bark from the south african wattle tree, as well as sicilian sumac leaf that were used to give imperial leathers a softness and strength finer than that of the most costly imported cars. The leather was then treated with tallow of ewe and sperm whale oil for suppleness and durable patina. The glass covers were high strength tempered with a series of fine, ceramic horizontal lines mimicking the grille. The covers ran afoul of the law in california which had initiated a system of roadside stops to check headlight aiming, using a device fitted over the headlamp lenses. This was not possible with chrysler covers unless they were removed. Since the california highway patrol was a key customer for chrysler police cars, by 1966, the glass covers were gone surviving just a year longer on the imperial line.ã¢?â donã¢?? Chrysler formed the chrysler corporation in 1924. With his lifetime experience in the auto industry, combined with a keen eye for style and engineering, he pushed the fledgling car company into one of the top three automakers in america. Chrysler soon expanded its lineup quickly with the addition of the up-market imperial line. First appearing in late 1927, the imperial line provided the fledgling company with a model that would compete with cadillac, lincoln and all the other american luxury makes. For 1957, chrysler introduced an all-new imperial. As a result, imperial sales soared past lincoln, which was long established as number two in the luxury car field. Imperial posted its best ever year with total sales at 37,593 units. Built on the 129” wheelbase chassis, the new imperial looked longer and lower. The “gun sight” taillight theme introduced in 1955 was continued, but this year the lamps were grafted into the flowing fins rather than placed on top. A special order, dress-up option was the faux spare tire cover on the trunk lid, which was called the flite sweep deck lid by chrysler. Inside, the spacious interior was covered with patterned cloth and vinyl, in fashionable two-tone colors. The dash still featured full instrumentation, rather than following the trend towards just using warning lights. Under the hood, the famous chrysler overhead valve “hemi” engine had a cubic inch displacement of 392. 7 and boasted 325 horsepower. Power was transferred to the wheels via a bush-button automatic transmission. Chrysler’s torsional aire suspension provided a comfortable ride and the power, drum brakes adequately stopped the near 4,800-pound luxury car. Its gleaming chrome and stainless trim adds to its striking styling and further accentuates all those jet-age design cues that make an imperial stand out in a crowd. Not only is the dash a styling delight, but so is combination tan cloth and blue vinyl interior. It is believed to have spent the bulk of its life in the southern illinois/st. Louis area and is now being offered on behalf of its third owner. Included with the sale is a file of restoration receipts as well as various manuals and period chrysler literature. Restored during the period from 2013 through 2016, this 1957 imperial is in very nice overall condition. The body presents well and was repainted in about 2013. The chrome and stainless trim items present well inside and out. The engine and transmission were rebuilt in about 2016. The engine bay is extremely clean and tidy. The original data/trim tag remains on the right front radiator support, and, based on the numbers shown, this is a very correct car. The engine starts easily, idles well, and propels the sedan down the road with the power and grace that one would expect from a large, 1950s american luxury car. The chassis is nice and tight and the transmission operates smoothly. The interior was replaced in about 2013 and remains very clean and presentable. The seats, door panels, carpets and headliner are in nice condition. The padded dashboard shows some signs of wear and there are some areas of separation, but the control area is very clean and all of the gauges are clear. The odometer shows just under 43,000 miles. The trunk is also clean and well detailed. Despite the fact 1957 was a banner year for imperial production, this is still rare car. This example is ready to be driven and displayed with confidence. 1955 chrysler imperial eight-passenger limousine one of only 127 examples made for 1955! We might have the solution here at motoexotica classic cars, a 1955 chrysler imperial limousine. Just 127 examples of the ultimate c70 crown imperial eight-passenger limousine were produced for 1955. This one was made in chryslers jefferson avenue plant in detroit, michigan. With understated elegance and a well-deserved reputation for engineering excellence, the imperial nameplate topped the chrysler product line from 1926 through 1975. In order to further distinguish the imperial line and compete better with cadillac, lincoln, mercedes-benz, and rolls-royce, chrysler corporation formally registered imperial as a separate marque in 1954. The limos black paint is in fair overall condition, considering its age and most of the trim is still shiny and the bumpers still look good but the body sports original paint that is cracked and flaking off in places. The windows are in good overall condition but the windshield has a few scratches on the drivers side from previous windshield wiper blades. The car rides on whitewall tires with factory wheel covers. Tires and hubcaps are in good shape. The body panels are in good shape but could benefit from some body shop love to restore them to full prominence. It is back by chryslers smooth-shifting powerflite two-speed automatic transmission. Optional accessories included factory air-conditioning, power windows and a signal-seeking radioinside, the black leather seats are in good shape, with front bench split 70/30 driver/passenger. The matching carpet is in good order while the lighter-colored headliner is in a similar positive state. Please note that this rarely seen limo has some needs cosmetically but is a good driver at present. It has an exhaust manifold leak, while equipped with a/c, it is inoperable. The temp guage is inoperable, the rear windows are inoperable and the tires need to be replaced to be driven any distance. Styling of the all-new 1955 imperials was based heavily on the fabulous new chryslers that also appeared that year and benefited from the full influence of renowned designer virgil exner and his forward look design theme. Imperials were renowned for their excellent build quality and in 1955; imperials were available in two basic forms the c69 short-wheelbase newport coupe or sedan and the long-wheelbase c70 crown imperial sedan and limousine. Both of the top-of-the-line c70 imperials could accommodate up to eight passengers in serene comfort. As the top imperial model offered, the c70 crown imperial limousine was based upon a 149. 5-inch wheelbase. Competition to this chrysler in 1955 included cadillacs series 75 limousine, lincolns continental, mercedes-benzs w186, packards patrician and rolls-royces silver wraith and phantom iv. His imperial is a little rough around the edges but with some time, love and parts, it can be restored to its previous greatness. As is, it is a rare find and makes for a unique classic automotive investment. Current mileage on the odometer shows 60,535 miles.
